Possible Pan Cyans?
    #3818024 - 02/22/05 05:16 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Well, I was walking around town today, after a HUGE rain btw, when I see these bad boys...not sure if they are the ones I am looking for...but if someone could identify for me.

Are they pan cyans?

If not, I'll just toss them. I have some more pics coming up.

Most of the caps are wavy and the gils are dark brownish.

Anything I can do to make it easier to identify for you guys?

Thanks again  :sun:

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

They are from Califonia, Southern California.

The gills are...dark brown.

The caps are from 1 and a half to 2 inches.

The stem length is almost 2 inches.

The cap is a darkish brown...caps tend to be wavy.

The spore print color is this....brown, with a TINY hint of purple? Might be my eyes though.

Here is a pic of the spore print.

The scent...I cant really smell anything but the earthy smell....

I'm not sure what would make you think they were Panaeolus. They are not. Habitat is as important as spore color. What were they growing from? Mulch, forest floor? They look like Psathyrellas to me.

Psathyrella looks likely, as does Inocybe. Neither is something that should be eaten.

Happy mushrooming!

Thank you!

I took your advice and tossed those suckers in my back yard. Hopefully, I can start having some grow back there now.
