well if you need to buy a heating device anyways why not go for a tub in tub? easy to make and would only be like 10 more dollars for the tubs

as i said im using this big chest, so tub in tub doesnt apply here, just looking for the best heating source, thinking of jsut throwing in 2 heting pads, the foil should keep in enough heat, if its a steady 80 ill be a happy man

If you have to go with the big chest, a heating pad will be your best option.

im with 'anoddlittleplace' on this one. a tub in tub setup would be the most efficient incubator you can setup. the temperature will be constant which will speed colonization.

go to an electronic store and buy a digital thermometer/hygrometer or if money is a problem a small thermometer. use it in your chest setup and you will find that your temperature will fluctuate greatly.

as much as you are set on using your 'chest' setup, the temperatures you will be getting with heating pads and foil will not be a constant temperature without constant supervision.

how about a tub in tub in your chest if you must =)...it just seems like a pain to heat some wooden chest.

Ive heard many bad things about heating pads, examples: not constant enough temps, and they can short out as they are not meant to be on all day

The most safest, realieable heating method I can think of is the one I use: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...e=0&fpart=1
Scroll about half way down that page, you should see what your looking for.

The link isn't working

Machmood: Instead of doing 72 jars, you may want to think about a bulk grow method instead

Heating pad(s) - but those are really meant to be stuck to glass (at least the ones sold for reptiles).

Maybe a heat lamp or two could work? Since you're lining it with foil, this will help to distribute the heat a little more evenly, though you'll probably get hot spots anyways. I've never tried this, but it doesn't sound so crazy.

i have a tiny 3 gallon tub that holds 12 jars, you want to hold 72 jars. with some simple math your tub would have to be 18 gallons which is only $12.73.

'theocean06' has a point though!

why not a reptile heat rock, they are made to run at a constant temp, be on 24/7, they are less fire hazard than leaving a heat pad on like that and it doesnt seem you want LAMPS pointed at your myc. as it may initiate some pinning.
