internal Dialogue
    #3817826 - 02/22/05 06:36 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

not to keep rehashing Don Juan, but i want to use his term. I think this is the best way to describe meditation, by shutting off your internal dialogue. It is hard to do at first until you find a technique to trick your mind into stop doing it. You start trying to stop thinking, then think about not thinking and spiral out of control just sitting there spinning with your eyes closed. It is odd how unnoticable (word?) it is, that you are constantly "talking" in your head and once you realize it, how hard it is to break loose of that. What i try to do to attain this is imagine nothingness. Now even in our minds, nothingness has some picture attached to it, usually just white or black solids. Then i strip this away slowly until there is no color, no sounds, only the thought of me stripping this stuff away, then i stop thinking about taking it all away and I have shut off my internal dialogue. Anyone else got any other ways to shut off their internal dialogue?

I learned how to stop thinking and practice it almost everyday. Silence of the mind is important to me. I find that the mind is made like layers with differant conscious streams of information. When you silence the surface (hearable thought) there are layers lower that still process thought. I don't know how deep it goes, but keeping my mind silent brings over me a sence of peace and calm. It is never a bad feeling.

I'm still trying to learn to read without saying the words in my head. I figure if I can do that it would help a lot.

i try to focus on the senses around me. the feeling of each key that my finger presses, how much pressure I am applying to my foot on the ground. the contrast in temperature between my arm and the armrest on the chair.

when I walk, I pay attention to the sounds my feet make.

pay attention to the world around you. a silenced mind is one that is work efficiently because it is much more aware of its surroundings.

you know what's really cool? rain. listen to it and try to focus in on as many drops as you can. it's awesome.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie
