melted tyvek?

well i pressure cooked 8 jars 2 days ago and when i opened it up to 'noc my tyvek filter had completly melted in every one of the jars... what could have caused this? to little water in PC? my PC only goes to 10 psi so i cooked them for nearly 2 hours, could this have been the culprit? tia

surely, 1/2 pinters, ball widemouth, wbs as sub., had 8 jars in the PC (filled to capacity w/ that amount), bout an inch of water up the sides of the jars, PC'd for about 2 hours, the tyvek was under the seal and ring of the jars. when i removed the lid, there was very little water left in the pc, and the wbs looked a lil burnt on the bottom of the jar... thats why i was guessing i didn't put enough water in the PC from the beginning, but i wasn't sure...

would anyone recommend, for next go, also covering the jars w/ foil and bringing water level bout 2" up the sides of the jars? jars were also only filled about half way w/ wbs, thanks

i usually go about half way up the jar becauze your going to lower the temp as soon as it gets to the boiling point.

make sure that when the rocker starts rocking, you lower the temp so you get a VERY gentle rock. That way, your temperatures wont be too high (especially at 2 hours).

Some other advice might be to invest in another pressure cooker, one that goes to 15psi. You could cut your pcing time in half, and not risk melting your tyvek. Belive me, it pays off.

Other than that, I'd just say you cooked it too long. Its happened to me before (melting the tyvek). It helps if you cover it with foil, and place a wet towel between your bottom plate and the jars. That way you're not burning your substrate.

cool thanks guys, i'll get another PC real soon, but would anyone experienced guys here think 10PSI @ 1 hour would suffice in sterilizing 1/2 pints and pints of WBS? thanks

:edit: oh i also have a metal perforated screen that sits on the bottom of the PC to create some space off of the bottom

hmmm thats real weird, the other day i fell asleep w/my PC on the burner (last time i'll PC jars at 4:00 a.m.) and my jars were cooked for about 4 hours at 15 psi, and my tyvek was perfectly intact.

I've seen the tyvek melt when it was cooked to long, with too little water and the excess paper around the sides og the jar touched the side of the PC. Covering the jars with aluminum foil has prevented all this.
