casing peat moss & verm?
    #3816069 - 02/22/05 11:24 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

can i use just peat moss & verm as a top casing layer or do i have to have another ingrediant in there such as calcium carbonate i think it was. I read that the peat moss may be too low of an acidity and you need to raise it or something... is this true?

Yes you need a pH buffer for peatmoss.

You can use just verm alone, or just coir. The best mix is coir/verm. Coir you can find at pet shops, reptile section. It is reptile bedding. Usually called "Bed-A-Beast" or "Eco Earth".

at gardening stores you can usually buy peatmoss mixes that already have lime in it for ph adjustment.

at any harsware store with a gardening section you can buy gardening lime. mix it all up in a dry state in this ratio. 4.5 peat moss, 1 lime, 1 vermic. once its all mixed satureate it with water. let it sit 15 min and make sure there are no dry spotsin it. drain the excess water off put on some rubber gloves and make snowballs out of the mix. squeeze the water out of the snowball. i find this makes a great casing with the right amount of moisture.
P.S. make sure you screen the peatmoss for wood chuncks and large particles. mechanics mesh works great for this. discard anything that doesn't fit thru the mesh (it's garbage).

great idea man, ill definately give that a try... i image you would still have to pasturize the peat moss & lime right? or do you only need to do that to the verm?

Lots of ppl are going to complain about this. I dont sterilize or pasturize this. just make sure you get the majority of the chunks out. as i said use mechanics mesh / mechanics cloth. (same stuff) screen it once toss the large stuff and then screen it again. I cased straw with this set up. had no problems with contamination. maybe i've just been lucky. Dont squeeze the ball so hard that all the water comes out. Pretend your packing a snowball and then give it one firm squeeze. that'll do it. i'd suggest prepare your casing and then bring out your cakes or trays and then case them. hope you like this. its cheap to buy all the suff and it will last a long time for future use
