Couple of beginner questions...

Hi, I'm using 1/2 pint jars. How do I really tell when the cakes are fully done? Do I just wait until the mycelial covers the outside of the jar (like when I look at the jar and it's fully white around it). Also what is good heating ways, I live about 5 minutes from canada and it's really cold here. Can I just use a heating pad? But I can't keep that on 24/7 won't that start a fire? I could use some advice thank you for you help!

When your jars are completely covered with white, give them a day or two more and they will be done. That ensures the inside has colonized too.
Heating pad has worked for myself and others in the past, but they are not very accurate. And then there is the fire hazard you mentioned.
Look halfway down on this page at the tub in tub setup, and build one of those. Very easy and relatively cheap.

Kool, thanks.. also one thing it's something that I don't want anyone to find *cough*parents. I noticed in the pictures that they used a black tub, it it alright if I use a transparent container. Also, I don't think I'll need that big of a tub, I'd probly get a lot smaller one.

Instead of using the whole 2 tub thing, could I maybe just get a transparent container put perlite on the bottom with my cakes and put a heating pad under the container?

No, you need to keep them DARK. That is why we use dark containers. Incubation conditions need to be warm, and dark.
Growing in your parents house is a bad idea.

1) Citric, don't worry about my parent there dump + they really don't care..
2) For the cakes to get done yes, I know they need to be in a dark place for the cakes to grow. Sorry I failed to mention after I birth them.

the set up you are mentioning is no more discreet than building a small tub in tub incubator/terrarium set up. get small tubs, a completely submersible aquarium heater, and put it in a place they arent going to look/notice it.
however growing in your parents house is a very big risk for you AND them. they could get their house ceased if your grow operation is found out. i suggest you know the laws in your state about what you are planning to do before you do it. and here is a tip....
1. tell absolutely NO ONE that you are growing. friend, cousin, girlfriend, boyfriend, mom, dad, or christ himself what you are doing. if they already know you are going to grow tell them your parents found all your shit and you arent going to grow anymore. if you tell one person you may as well consider it ten, and THAT is when you get busted.

Vancouver's great that way. I live in Toronto, not quite as lenient as B.C. but better than the States. Thank the Maker for Canadian drug laws! There are so many things you can do up here that I wouldn't even consider doing anywhere else.

I think the laws in the States are just ridiculoous-so a person decides to "ruin" their OWN life by using some shrooms, weed or God forbid cocaine, because they want to "ruin" their life they deserve to rot in a cell for 10 years??? How in the hell is that going to help the person? I feel for you guys in the States, be safe.

Unfortunately we're forced to be by the NeoFacist government we have. "government of the people, by the people, for the people" my ass.
End of rant; my apologies for jacking your thread.
