son of a #$%!@#$%!#$% inspiration
    #3814562 - 02/22/05 01:15 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I am a musician who has lost his inspiration. I want to start a new band with one of my friends, but I can't seem to come up with anything original, even at home practicing. I've tried psychadelics and bud, and those have always inspired me, but now they just aren't working for me. Does anyone have any suggestions at all for this out-of-inspiration musician?

As a writer, there are two ways I deal with bouts of writer's block or lack of inspiration.

1. Ignore the project altogether. Get out of the house, see a movie, go to a garden, zoo, show, whatever. Just living and doing different things can conjure up all sorts of inspiration.

2. Say 'Fuck It' and just write whatever comes to my head, rambling about nonsense and not caring. Sometimes just starting and going with the flow can release inspirational power.

good luck

Listen to a song you like.

Learn how to play it. Then slowly tweak it around to your liking. I don't necessarily mean rip the song off... but ya know, if you messing around with something familiar and enjoyable, ideas seem to come out of nowhere.

Stand on your head for a couple hours then watch some weird fantasy movies from the 80's.

I don't have a problem with writers block, I can write millions of songs, I just can't come up with shit on my guitar, it's so frustrating. I used to pick it up and play some cool crazy shit, but now I pick it up and go.... uh..................

yeah...

Well to be honest you may just not be as creatively minded as you once thought.

Do a few pushups. Punch yourself in the face. Take a run around the block. Pour cold water down your pants. Stare directly into the sun.

I'd have to agree with this as well.

everyone gets inspiration from different things... if i ever get in a crappy rut when trying to write some music.. i just put in some cds that i like alot and blast them loud as shit.  i dunno what kind of music you like to play.. but if im tryin to make a hard rock/metal song ill just  scream and mumble incoherentlly and throw stuff until i get it to sound right  ... seems to work for me most of the time
