got a new cutting!!
    #3813882 - 02/21/05 11:29 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

just got a nice fat pedro cutting in the mail today, just got a few questions about if from you guys, first off there is this spot on it, the member i got it from said it was a waterspot....here is a pic of it, what can i do about it, should i jsut plant it and it will go away over time?

also, on both ends of the cutting there is red stuff on the core, looks kinda like blood, is this bad?  here is a pic of the red....

and the last question, how do i know what end was originally the bottom and the top, i figure it would not be good to flip it over the wrong way when i plant it, correct?

thanks for any help guys

oh, also, here is a pic of the entire cutting, with a roll of paper towels for scale...

thanks for any help guys

peace  :rasta:

I think you gotta let them form a callus over the wound before they will shoot roots. You might want to get a book or 3.

That does not look good. I've never experienced something like that but it certainly looks like a rot or infection. try cutting higher up to healthy flesh then let it callous again

to tell which is the top end you can see V formations in the skin, the open end of the V is the pushing out of new growth ie: the tip

The red stuff is the beginnings of a form of rot...the person did not let the wounds dry enough before mailing them. I'd agree with faslimy in that you should slice off the layer that has the red, and chuck the remaining section in a windowsill or at least somewhere dry to properly callous ready for planting. And you are right you don't want to plant it downwards. As for this cactus the right hand end of the pic with the cat in it is the top. Theres a few ways of knowing, theres the V notches that fas mentioned, the growth lines which slope down from the spines to the valley of the ribs, and also the spine sets are usually angled upwards in pedroes. Good luck with growing it!

PS that scarring is a pity and unfortunatley it won't go away...keep an eye on it as long as its tan colour and not darker or mushy it should be fine. Could pay to use some insecticide on it as it looks like it may be 'scale insect' those little bastards go under the skin and drill into the core. You can also rub methylated spirits on the dark bits (if they spread) with a tissue or something.

ok, the cactus itself is hard, even the white/yellow spot, none of it is mushy, then on both ends there is that red stuff, he said it fell down at his house and he didnt know what it was, so he let it sit there for like a week, and that is when that spot formed, so...should i cut off like and inch or so of both ends, and see if there is no red behind the cut?

edit: also, i have it sitting in my closet, i live in texas, and is is very dry here, so should it be ok there? it is dark, cool, and dry.

i will cut the ends tonight to see if that red stuff doesnt go all the way through, and if not, how can  i make sure it doesnt form again?

thanks for all the help guys

leave it like that, let it callous well and put it to root, no need to lose time by cutting tips and letting them heal because of an orange spot... while there are no soft areas everything is fine.

so felix, your saying i do not need to trim the red spot off the cactus, just leave it there and let it callous...dang that was close i was just a bout to cut it too.  the red spots are hard, so i guess its fine then, fromt he pic, how long do you think in need to callous?

the orange is indeed a sign of infection but it was contained, otherwise your cactus would have soft/gray spots, then its a good idea to cut. if you had cut you would have to wait another couple weeks too... thats not really too bad. just unnecessary.
give it about 10 days, root and plant it normally...
no need to use rooting hormones.

The exposed tissue will also turn orange if it gets too wet before callousing. It 'can' lead to trouble but San Pedro are so hardy that any problems stemming from that are rare.

they take maybe a week to calis? ive had an unplanted 6 inch segment of san pedro out calising for over 2 months now, and it still will be fine to plant. these suckers are so damn hardy and ive even seen pics where if two ends arent in the ground and its left horizontal long way without ever gettin rooted in the ground, it actually grows roots from the sides and new growth pops upward.

kindof like that. instead of the usual

do you think it is ready to plant now, based on time frame, the ends of it are all hard, and i actually think a root is poking out from the side on the bottom of the cactus, or maybe a pup, thanks
