uncolonized jars update
    #3812991 - 02/21/05 08:58 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

In my last post I asked about a product(Bob's Red Mill brf)and weather or not anyone had problems with colonization using it. Well, its been over 25 days and I now have 2 jars fully colonized and 8 jars with no growth. So my new question is should I dump the 8 jars and start with a different brand of spore syringe? Or can I just re-inoculate the jars with new syringe? Since I did get two jars to grow, can I still use the remainder of the brf from Bob's, or do you think I should go with a different brand?

I have used Bob's Red Mill BRF flour with success.

If you bought that syringe from a vendor I doubt that it is the problem, especially since two jars grew, which indicates the other jars are bad (water content, contamination, etc.) Squirting more spores into bad jars would be a waste. I suggest dumping those jars and starting over.

There seems to be no contamination, and there is no water standing on the bottom of the jars, and I opened one jar to check if it was too dry, it was very moist. The flour is over 8 months old, could this be the problem?

Dump the jars and start over. 25 days is a long time, every so often I will have a couple jars that germinate until almost 15 days but they are maybe a couple out of every 30 jars.

Oh yeah, I use that exact same brf and I get it from the grocery store. It works just fine for me.

I would also recomend trying a new syring or possibly looking into the karo tek with the syringe you already have.

I don't know if flour can get "too old" but I don't think so, as long as it was stored in an airtight container. How did you sterilize? I once lost several dozen jars to contamination and I finally traced the contam back to the flour itself. I had tried to save a buck by buying bulk. Big mistake. This was before I bought a pressue cooker; simple boiling couldn't kill it.

Excellent suggestion concerning the karo tek, I'm headed into the description of the tek now!
Thanks

I did use the boiling tek simply because I couldn't get the pressure cooker to seal, but there is no visable contams, no smell other than that wet verm&flour smell.
