Thin stems...

My friend birthed her cake into a poor man's terrarium (a coke bottle) and did the following: put an inch of moist verm on the bottom for moisture. 1/4 inch of verm on the top of the cake, and a 1/4 inch of verm in a jar lid. Then the cake was placed on this jar lid. Fanning 3-5 times a day, temperature's normal. So in about 1 and a 1/2 weeks, pinning starts. Tiny little knots everywhere... About 6 pins start, and they are the biggest ones now. All the rest are still tiny. But these pins are about an inch to 2 and a 1/2 inches tall, and their stems are like half a centimeter wide. Isn't that thin? One of the shrooms looks pregnant: it has a large middle. But everything else is thin. Will her mushrooms fatten up? Also, the caps are very light in color. Her jar that is going invitro has dark caps, and thicker stems... These caps don't even show up until the pin is 1/2 an inch tall, and they are light coloured... The strain is Gulf Coast, grown using the pF Tek. Any comments would be appreciated...

Thin stems are usually a sign of poor humidity/moisture, but with the generally strange way in which your flush seems to be developing, I would hypothesize that perhaps you don't have a good pure strain isolated. FOAF got inconsistent results in the past using strains that were old and re-used so many times, without going back to agar and isolating out a vigorous strain. One of these two (humidity or strain) is very likely to blame, IMO.

The GC tends to have thin stems when grown on a straight PF tek method. Your friend's shrooms should be fine however. Relax and enjoy the fruits of her labors
