Munching Mushrooms
    #3809727 - 02/21/05 03:24 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Somethings been munching on this mushroom?

I found some Amanita species growing in my driveway. Watch what happens.

As soon as it grows a bit something starts munching on my mushrooms. I'm not that upset really because I wasn't planning on eating this one anyway.

These mushrooms were found a few days ago in Sydney Australia and are a good indication of things to come. More mushrooms are on the way. (I hope my munching mushroom friend leaves me a few)

I wonder though... I think the animals that are eating the mushrooms have evolved to digest them without problems.

I think the mushroom beaver has actually evovled to make their dams with certain mushrooms as well. If they get hungry, then they can just munch on the mushrooms that are surrounding them.

I like hairy beavers.

Actually, rats and mice (I don't know about other rodents) can eat the deadly Amanitas without ill effects. Their digestive systems destroy the amatoxins, phallotoxins, and various other toxins. This is one of the very good reasons (aside from the obvious ethical issues) to not try the "pet theory" for testing if a mushroom is poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

We don't have any beavers around here. Do you think I should sent a sample specimen of to CSI to see if they can match the teeth marks to any know mushroom munchers. Hopefully then i will be able to build a trap and catch these mushroom munchers in the act and preserve my mushrooms from future feeding frenzies.
PS. It could just be those dam hippy bush rats. They are hairy and ugle enough and sneak around at night getting into all sorts of other stuff.
