a lot of people don't know it, but your first days of playing guitar are just like building a house. You want to build it on good hard sturdy land. With good wood or whatever they use these days to build houses.
anyways. what I'm trying to say is...
Play easy easy stuff when you start out. when you have the easy stuff down even if its at like 1/8 the original tempo. just make sure you get it all down good. Then pick the tempo up with what you have down good. memorization and everything else will come naturally after that.
I also like to teach people how to play open chord because it opens your ears up to sounds you didn't know you could play.
have fun with it man!
