Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself
    #3808767 - 02/21/05 12:14 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Author Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself

Feb 20, 11:42 PM (ET)

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.

Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering New Journalism - or "gonzo journalism" - in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story.

An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson wrote such books as "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" in 1973 and the collections "Generation of Swine" and "Songs of the Doomed." His first ever novel, "The Rum Diary," written in 1959, was first published in 1998.

Other books include "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

It doesn't say he committed suicide, it just says he shot himself.

Unless He left a suicide note or witnesses we may never know.

If you read the statement from the Sheriff, he committed suicide w/ a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

No, he dies from a self inflicted gushot to the head.

He didn't say it was intentional.

Hey, FUCK YOU. You die the way you wana die. We can go out how we wana go out. How dare you disrespect Hunter, or anyone for commiting suicide.
calling someone weak for killing themselves is ignorant. You have no-idea his motives, or anyone elses for that matter.
Mabey he just didn't want to get old. Did you ever think about that? Have you been around a lot of old people? Ever been in a nursing home? Alot of those people want, and need to be dead. The later years of life are rarely fun.
As your body, and mind go, your happiness, and dignity go along with them.
Try having someone change your diapers for about a week before you call anyone weak.
I'll tell you right now, i'll put a bullet through my head before i have to be taken care of for the rest of my life. Thats just me.

You don't seem to know Thompson's personality very well. If he did commit suicide, it's doubtful it was because he was "weak," as there had been much more turbulent times earlier in his life, such as when his house was raided and they found drugs and dynamite, that he could've killed himself to escape his problems. But he killed himself at age 67, at a relatively quiet time in his life other than some physical problems. He seemed like the type of guy who would despise to die slowly, watching his body waste away, so he took his own life, simply because he had given everything he had to give and he didn't want to live feeble like that for the rest of his life.

His friends often talked about how he would come up with crazy ideas of how he wanted to die, including being shot out of a cannon and such, simply because he didn't want to just waste away, but go out with a flash, as he had done his whole life. He finally decided that time had came it seems, and so he committed suicide. I don't see much of a problem with it, if he felt he finally was in decline then may he rest in peace.

In a way, I could almost see suicide as an empowering thing. It lets you decide when you will die, not God. You gain control of your own mortality.

Not to mention that he killed himself with his son and grandson in the next room. ABSOLUTE WASTE OF LIFE and I can say without remorse that I am happy to be rid of such a worthless individual. I wont wast time referencing him again.

You sure seem really open minded about other peoples views and beliefs. In some cultures suicide is extremely honorable and in certain circumstances, the only honorable way to die. Just because you have an opinion about what death should be like and how we all should stop living, doesn't mean that every person believes the same. I believe that suicide is irresponsible to your loved ones but others may not. An individuals death is so very personal, that yours or my opinion doesn't matter at all. the only opinion that matters is the one of the person dying. If they are satisfied with their decision, then they will be at peace when the time comes. Then, in an instant, that opinion is gone.

Hunter S. Thompson was way more than the man that committed suicide. He was an innovator and a wild card in journalism that made life more colorful for us all. How he died should be just a small part of his memory.
