Straw vs. Animal Bedding
    #3808421 - 02/20/05 10:04 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I cannot find wheat straw in my area. I can find alfalfa, but I've been informed it's no good for mushies and the shit's expensive. Organic Pine/Cedar bedding is readily available though, and it's cheap (free). It's shredded pretty fine, I was wondering, if prepared like straw, can I spawn WBS to it fine? Anyone with any experiences? Was also thinking about throwing some poo in with it too.

Thanks,
bOB

I don't think animal bedding will float for you as a bulk substrate. Completely different materials from straw there.

These people sell miniature bales of shredded wheat straw online:

It's my understanding that pine and cedar won't even work for wood loving species, much less cubensis.
You might check the free papers for straw. In my area farmers run ads all the time selling straw.
I believe timothy hay has been used with some success, but I could be wrong..

you're correct, cedar has a natural fungicide, it takes almost 30 years for the
logs to decompose and I have never once seen a mushroom of any sort on a cedar log
