Light question
    #3808405 - 02/20/05 10:01 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have only one problem with my fruiting chamber: light. I don't want my FC to be suspicious looking, so cutting the lid and installing plexiglass won't work, and I don't want a cord going into it either. I want to use something with a battery, just a little light that provides enough light for them and won't overheat the FC, and also will last a while on one battery. Right now I'm using a tiny little flashlight hanging from the lid, and it works fine but it uses a AAA battery every day. You guys got any suggestions?

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

can you not just put it somewhere where it can get light from outside the chamber? I could be wrong but they only need light in order to start fruiting, and if you can see them then there is enough light. So why not just leave your light in your room on?

scientific studies have proven that it takes only 5 milliseconds of light per day to initate proper pinset, then none after that.

Get a keychain LED light from radioshack for $5, hang it inside the fruiting chamber. It will last a long time.

shrooms need VERY little light to grow, they only need it to pin, or initiate growth. i would reccomend using your current set up for now until a pin set is established, then cut back on light use, to maybe turning the light on for a maximum of 3-6 hours a day. there are others with more experience so wait to see if i get bashed for this idea before you try it.

Light is not a key factor in growing.

Most of us use light for directional growth.

Lifting the cover to fan a few times a day is MORE then enough light.

if your that concerned about being obvious by running an extension cord or cutting a hole in your box.... shouldn't you be concerned with smell?

Do you really think those keychain LED lights will last a while? I mean 12 hours is a long time for a battery operated light to last, but it's still too short for what I want. Toka: How long do those push lights last?

brewhaha: My fruiting chamber doesn't reek. I can barely smell it even when it's open and I'm fanning it.

LED lights draw 1/100 of the conventional power of a light bulb for the same amount of light (alomst none of the enerdy is conversted into heat.) It should last a long while. at least a couple of weeks.

If it doesn't, hit me up and I'll mail you one....a personal guarantee. Gl with ur grow!

I could've swore that you were supposed to get a good air exchange for a casing...shouldn't you leave the lid off?

I totally agree. Check out the Bulk Neglect Report this guy had no light except for removing his sheet of plastic to mist. Your shrooms may grow in weird or differant directions but they are still shrooms.

As long as it's not direct light, you should be fine.

Thanks for the suggestion chocbruce, I think I'm going to try one of those. I've got a little LED flashlight in there now, but it's kind of a cheapo. I'll look for a keychain one today.

If you use inconsistant or poor light (ie not the right spectrum, like a flash light or keychain light) the shrooms will in all directions. Pins also seem to happen faster (but not in greater quanity) with better, brighter, longer lighting during pinning.
My friend's room alway has a pleasent sweet earthy mushy smell....

UV and blue spectrum are what Psilocybe spp. react to.  I can't remember the exact wavelengths, but I think that it's in the 300-400 range for blue spectrum.  Also note that UV rays can cause cancer.  So, yeah, you should probably use blue spectrum.
