For those of you who use rye...
    #3807991 - 02/20/05 08:15 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Just curious what kind of contamination rate is typical for the rye jars. I'm averaging 20% contamination and I haven't even cased yet. This is my first grow so I'm not too down about it. However, I do need to pinpoint what I'm doing wrong.

There's no such thing as a typical contamination rate. If you take all of the appropriate countermeasures (and with a little luck), there will be a 0% contamination rate. Read through the FAQs and make sure you're doing everything "by the book".

I used to get a few jars contaminated when I first started using rye.

Now I let the rye sit in the jars for 24 hours before pressure cooking.

Haven't gotten a contam in a rye jar since.

20% for a first grow isnt bad, my first was long before I discovered this site and
my contam rate was around 80%, to help you discover your problem requires much
more info, may times it can come from failure the sterilize the needle often enough.

try this: prepare all of your rye jars and pc them as per the tek you are following. inoculate them except for two (1 if your stingy). Mark these jars somehow so you can i.d. them from the other jars. incubate them all including the ones you didn't put spores into. if you get growth in the marked jars you have a problem with the your rye, jars or pc'ing method. if these jars don't have any mold and you get contamination in your inoculated jars you have a problem with your spores or your ability of getting the spores into your jars. It may seem like a waist of two jars but it will help you narrow down where you are having a problem.

Thanks for the input. I think that the next time around I'll be doing everything in a bathroom. I'm going to remove as much as possible from the room, sterilize everything and do the inoculations there. I think I screwed up by doing all the work in the kitchen. Although I cleaned up and sprayed everything down with Lysol, I still had people and a dog coming in and out, bringing God knows what contaminants into the room. For some reason, almost all my contaminated jars are infected with lipstick mold, which is odd because it's supposed to be pretty rare.

Do you G2G rye very often?

I used to G2G as a primary spawn propagation method. Even with an Aerostat XC & a flowhood, on occasion one would sneak in (I think by wicking through the filter). But, no more than about 2 - 3%.

Now, my foaf primarily use's liquid culture for spawn propagation, so there is no opening fresh jars - anymore & the contam rate has fallen to about nothing.

But, contam's are everywhere & shit happens , no matter how careful one is.

Oh yeah, and thats as far as the colinisation portion is concerned. Every now and again i have a casing that may contam. I primarily use multi-spore and mycellium culture, via karo-tek.
