Can agar be microwaved for sterilization? eg. mix up w/H2O, microwave, leave to cool?

I believe that it can not being the microwaves temp can not be set to under 200 d. F anyhting over that can result into the malt sugars carmelising thus giving you retarded etc... mushrooms

yes add 4g malt 2 g agar to 200ml water. i heat it up in one jar then pour about 1cm in each jar with metal lids (yes metal) loosely placed on top. i nuke them for 8 mins each. i add 200mls instead of 100mls because half of it goes off as steam so you end up with 4% malt agar

no ive had no problems with caramelizing. boiling sugar water gets well past 100 C (hence confectioners thermometers) i have never had a contam in a jar, so i think 8 mins is probably overkill (but so what?). i also nuke honey water in the same way but adding about 120-130mls to 4g malt/honey to allow for steam release. there is no problem with sparks either with metal lids. microwaves are not absorbed by metal but reflected but there is no problem if there is something else to absorb the microwaves. just dont go wrapping jars in tinfoil or no microwaves will get through!!

well yeah, i meant you end up with a 4%mea . which is 4%malt and 2%agar in 100ml water
