then they didn't die, did they? I mean, sure, the electric beeping hospital machine might think they're dead, but were they in fact dead?

Well, in many cases of 'near-death expiriences' the person in question is pronounced dead by the doctor or nurse ect. I think it's generally understood that when the brain stops functioning, that is the point when a person's consciousness either ceases to exist or travels to another realm, which ever the case may be.

you're drawing a line, I think, but where? three trees? seven? sixty? four hundred? two or three trees isn't 'close' to a whole orchard.

Sorry, my word choice may have been confusing. What I was trying to explain was that the definition of a 'near-death expirience' is that a person actually expiriences death but does not remain dead. So if you had a 'near tree-planting expirience' that would mean you actually did expirience tree-planting, but you didn't remain in that 'state' of tree-planting long enough to plant the whole orchard or whatever. Really, if the afterlife is supposed to be a perminent existance then the analogy would be more accurate if you imagined that 'death' in the near-death expirience would correspond to a never-ending state of tree-planting. A 'near-tree planting expirience' would mean that you did expirience tree planting, and even came close to planting trees forever. You know what I mean? So in both examples, you got a taste of the real thing, although you didn't remain perminently in that state.

how long must the hospital machine think you're dead for you to actually be dead? how many breaths must you miss taking before God pushes the big red button?

I dunno... I guess you'd have to ask God when he pushes the red button. This question doesn't challenge the possibility of an afterlife though, because there is some point where the consciousness either ceases to exist, or continues in a different realm.

"...not suggesting that someone's testimony of their own 'near-death' expirience is proof of an afterlife, however, it must be considered as evidence..."

must it?

Well, I guess you could ignore the solemn avowel of those who claim to have these expiriences, that would be your prerogative. But the question has serious implications, so, for me anyways, it's a hard question to avoid. Although I concede, the verdict is still out.
