Pressure cooker Q.
    #3807898 - 02/20/05 07:54 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I couldn't find it in the Faq section so could someone please just conferm this for me. When it says (for PF tek) to use about one inch of water in the P cooker it means one inch in first before the jars go in or one inch after they are in?

Put in one inch prior to heating your pressure cooker (with the jars in it as well). The water is where the steam comes from. Just make sure that you don't get excess water in your jars.

Read the entire pressure cooker manual that it came with before you start fucking with it.

It doesn't matter. Just stuff as many jars into your pressure cooker as you can/want. Fill the bottom of the pressure cooker with one inch of water. Close the lid. Turn on the heat. Wait until the petcock on top starts rocking. Adjust temperature so it's rocking at an even rate. Once it's at this point, you can start timing it. If you're doing PF jars, leave them in for 45 minutes after you have your temperature properly adjusted. Turn heat off. Let cool. Open pressure cooker.

Take another run through the FAQs.

Why would you put the water in after the jars?

Just put one inch of water in your pressure cooker. Then put a towel or something in so the jars dont come into contact with the metal. Then put the jars in, close the lid, and your good to go.

No problem, good luck with your attempt. I would suggest that you memorize the PF tek inside-out.

See, frock says to put the water in before and you say to put it in aftewards. Which is right. I think if you put the inch in before the jars and then put the jars in the water level might be to high.

I doesn't matter that much. It's not the water that's going to sterilize the jars but rather the steam produced. As long as there is enough water to produce enough steam you're fine.

Make sure you put down a cloth hand towel or something else so the jars don't sit directly on the bottom. If you don't it's very likely the glass will crack due to heat stress.

It doesn't matter, man. Trust me. The only worry you could possibly have about pressure cooker water levels is if the water is leaking into your jars...which, if they're standing upright, is impossible to do no matter if you put in the water first or the jars first.
