is it my birthday?
    #3806251 - 02/20/05 10:07 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I am a first time poster and a first time grower. I'm attempting 3 jars using the PF tek. It has been 40 days since inoculation and I'm concerned about the timeline. I've been incubating in a water bath at about 84 deg. All jars are doing well but seem to have stalled with some uncolonized or partially colonized areas (see pics).

I've read that with PF cakes you should try to wait until pins form in the jars. This is not happening and I'm concerned about how long it has taken for my jars to get to this point.

Should I birth the cakes? should I cold shock them?

Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Have you tried turning the jars upside down??? That can help get some gas exchange and sometimes that will initiate the mycellium to start up again. No you dont have to wait until pins form to birth a PF cake.

I have tried flipping the jars and also, the lids are pretty loose.

its not your birthday. Your mixute looks too wet, like water got in there during the steriliztaion process. Turn your jars upside down and knock the cake loose and give it another week. Hopefully the mycel will grow up and around the sides and cover it. Dont crumble those cakes when you birth them. The inside will not be colonize and will not colonize until lthey fruit and use up some of the moisture in them

I will try that, but I think you may be seeing water on the outside of the jars (I have them sitting in water up to the middle of the jars). When I look at the jars, they do have some condensation on the inside but no drops of water and when I flip the jars, there is no water in the bottom.

this cake doesn't look fully colonize, the verm looks too small. it looks too tightly packed. Flip it over and give it a few day and see if the mycel puffs up. I still wouldn't crumble those cakes because the verm looks too small and too tightly packed for adequate colonization inside the cake

I seem to get one or two jars from every batch that look like that on the bottom. I just slice off the uncolonized bit with a clean, sharp knife.

You don't have to wait for pins to form in the jar. That was part of the original, (antiquated), pf tek. If you are 100% colonized, it's time to birth the babies. JMO

You should be good to go, my friend. Just get rid of the uncolonized substrate and either birth 'em or cold shock/dunk&roll...depending on which method you prefer.

In the end, my friend, we will all be together again.
