HoT SHiT! Coconut bark for humidity!
    #380581 - 08/28/01 09:20 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

A.F.O.A.F Used coconut bark soaked in water to throw in the bottom of a big rubbermaid hinged top container because they didn't want to use perlite due to the extreme amount of humidity it creates usually (95+) I'm sure if less water is used it can be regulated but it's too hard, they also didn't have perlite but they still had coco bark from the casing left over. If you're willing to spend the extra money on the coconut bark (get chunks) it works great they say the humidity is consistantly between 90-93% which is much better than 95-99% at least from what I've read. true or false?

You're asking for contams. You need something non-nutritious for humidity.

That being said, perlite gets infected with stinky bacteria pretty quick unless you add bleach or H2O2 to the water.

If perlite produces too much humidity the obvious answer is to use less perlite or drill some holes in your container to lower it - improves air exchange too.

No, even the bark off a tree has nutrional value. Or a dead branch. Still, these fibers are absorbent which makes them the perfect medium for growth of any sort. Mycelia included.
