is my substrate too dry now?
    #3805319 - 02/20/05 01:44 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have 5 1/2 pints of br/verm. I steam steralized them and put them aside for about 36 hrs in about 68-72 degrees. I just had a piece of foil over the tops of the jars without anthing covering the innoc. holes in the lid. I just removed the foil to tape the holes up and noticed there is hardly any droplets of water on the sides of the jars. When i got done steralizing them there was lots of water droplets. Do you think that I might have let the holes go uncovered for too long? I just got a syringe off the net that didnt grow anything so I dont wanna loose half of another syringe by having too dry of substrate.

you don't have to put anything over the innoc holes .you can just leave em open .(fuck the tape it will just slow down mic growth anyway) I just did six BRf jars and just used foil lids with open innoc holes and the colonized in a week in a half. THE jars will look dry at first but as myc colonizes it will get a ,little more moist

i just re-read your post you did have em covered while steaming though right? If not i think they would be too moist.

Yes he had foil on them during the sterilization...he let them sit for 36 hours after he sterilized and wants to know if they are too dry now...

it seems like if the jars are at 86 degrees, then that would cause the moisture to evaporate out of the innoc. holes. Ive had some jars in a small container with the lid on and I noticed condensation forming on the sides of the container. hopefully there is enough moisture left.

It depends on how tight you had your foil on those. When you buy presterlized jars the foil is on real tight, keeping the moisture within the jar and from my experience they were still good a month after they arrived.
