Germinating Mango's?
    #3804996 - 02/20/05 12:06 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

ive been trying to grow a damn mango tree forever!  i keep failing....miserably.  i did once get a M. indica to sprout but it died at about 2 feet (which isnt old or big...they are like avacados).

the pic below is of the seed of that plant sprouted.

so now i bought a few different mangoes.  from googling it and knowing very little about mango species varieties hybrids or whatever i came up with M. indica  "siagon m13269".  feel free to correct as im sure im wrong.  teh store had tehgm labelled as somthing with an A from mexico

anywho, if someone could give me some tips on germinating and tehir experiences that would eb swell.  i have googled and treid some ways but so far nothing...i cant remember wat i did to sprout that one as i want really "into" it that much at the time.

mangos may be like avacodos in the regard that a sprouted seed is likely not going
to bear any fruit... something you may want to try is planting an entire fruit,
that or at possible setting it on moist soil and covering it with wet leaves

ok good idea, ill try that right now. my comparison to avacados was refering to its seedling look. tall skinny plant with starter leaves rather high up.

are you saying it wont have fruit due to genetics, or my location?

planting the whole fruit sounds not good to me.
try googling once more. there is a few sites
describing the germinating methods..
The one in which the seed's shell is cutted
but not taken away worked fine with me..

how do you think it happens in it's natural habitat, I have hundreds of tiny plum
trees around a larger plum because it dropped its fruit and shed it's leaves,
it's a part of it's natural life cycle. the fruit provide initial nutrients for
the germinating seeds as well as moisture to assist with germination

many times fruit pulp (also seed coat) contains some chemicals
that might inhibit germination..

too slow process to my taste..
(waiting them to break up or dilute..)
that's all..

The fruit is an evolved vehicle for dispersion it's not essential in the nutritive value of the young seedling.

The embryo inside the seed uses hydrolytic enzymes to turn a starchy white endosperm inside the seed into food for germination and the first few weeks of growth until photosynthesis sustains the plant.

i germinated a mango by opening the shell off gently, wrapping it in wet paper towel under my sink changing the towel every two days.

within a week and a half it had germinated.

i then like a potato, put som toothpicks in that badboy and put it in a vase on teh window sill, rootside in water changing water every few days as needed. it then went in my bathroom because i shower and i figured it would like that, and it did. but i had a windowsill in my shower at the time.

i moved to an apartment and my gramma took it over and she has it growing healthy at the kitchen sink window facing south.

peace.

when you say open the shell, you mean take teh shell right off and go bare seed?

i will be trying all these methods. ive got abotu a dozen to play with and the store always has more...too bad they cost so damn much!

somehow I didn't succeed with a bare seed, but probably it is the best way...

the way I cutted the seed shell:

I recommend "The After-Dinner Gardening Book" by Richard W. Langer

for those who are interested in growing houseplants
from fruit seeds. Not because of the methods he uses,
but the way it is told.. funny book..
