What is going on here?

Well, i put my cactus outside 3 days ago. When i went to check on it today, the tips that are exposed to the sun had turned white...

I once had a tip discoloration problem that was apparently due to lack of lime. But it was mid-season.

Is too low soil Ph what my pedro is suffering from? I know i should give it a hefty dose of lime and/or wood ashes in the end of dormancy but as of now it still hasn't given me any sign of new growth...

Could it be sun burn or anything else?

i can't boast any expertise in the realm of cacti, but it is my understanding that you need to acclimate your cactus to direct sunlight. if it hasn't been, try leaving it in the shade for a week or two before direct exposure. what type of temps are you experiencing in your region?

I wasn't aware of that, thank you! I thought cacti were more resistant to those kinds of changes than usual plants.

Temps have been between 5? and 20? celsius right now (~40? - ~65?F)

Hope i haven't done irreversible damage to the growing tips.

Sounds like sunburn to me. ALL living things must be slowly acclimatized to changing light conditions. That would include cacti and other plants, your dog, and you.

You've permanently discolored the epidermis.

So what's a good way to harden off your plants so they don't burn? If moving them from indoors to outdoors, try 3 hours sunlight, 10 hours flours (or whatever other light source you use), do that for 2-3 days, change to 4 hours sunlight, 9 hours flours, etc. etc.

. Worse that could happen anyways it the tips stopping to grow and sending out pups so...

theocean06, that burn was caused by no more than 4-5h of morning sun in each of the 3 days. You may want to start with full shade, than 1h, 2h, etc...

What I do is move my plants from just inside my windows to just outside the windows towards their final destination in a slow motion progression.

it shouldnt hurt it that bad, ive had slighter discoloration than that and my pedros just get right back in the groove after a few weeks.
