Im glad I was of some help after all.lol.I dont generally start waterlilies from seed very often as I can buy various waterlilies from a local greenhouse and they come ready to bloom.Lotuses I have to grow from seed as theyre not available locally and to buy large lotuses and have them shipped can be a bit expensive and they often only carry cultivars which I dont like to work with.So seed is the only valid option for me for lotuses but occasionally I get waterlily seeds in trade through a group of gardeners I sometimes trade with.

I have just the opposite, readily available is lotuses, and lillies are a bit
more scarce, part of the reason I'm growing from seed, unlike fruit trees and
much of the plants I order (bare root) the lillis are a shipping problem as you
know because its expensive to ship wet products. My mother used to frequent a
pond that was overgrown with them when she was younger, she took me to the
location which is now a housing development, aparently lotus is asked for  by
name and thats what most of the aquatic centers in this area handle

I piss a lot of people off simply by saying "pot is pot", I try not to recognise
the differences in strains, if it has a name, it;s bound to be expensive.

thanks, you've been more helpful than you know.

here's the first link i found for starting from seed, some good pics

lotus

i just scraped two, first using a nail file, then a nutmeg grinder, then a pliers and serrated knife, the knife did the trick. they're going in a small glass bowl over the floor heater

hopefully an outdoor disc heater in the pond will keep these guys happy through the winters, unless I talk the wife into letting me keep a small barrel in our house

I germinated some lotus seeds on my monitor, same basic method, serated knife
and a few minures of sawing, I did one with an 1/8" hole on the drill press
and it also germinated fine, it was in my tea pitcher and I was waiting for the
cats to knock it over.

I picked up a heater for a whirlpool tub a couple years ago and have a couple
of pumps laying around I guess I have a use for it now, that large blue watering trough.

Glad you got them to germinate.  I don't think the pump is necessary unless you want to add a small fountain.  That trough should fill up in no time

ok, new method, scaification by abrasion, I used a japanese water stone to scrape
off the seed coat on some of the fresher seeds, it came off fairly easily and
those for seeds went into 2 1inch net pots preped with newspaper, and my compost mix

hopefully these seeds germinate

How are they doing?

I just put mine in a 5 gal bucket filled with soil, organic bone meal (12N-0-0) sand, aquatic gravel and few inches of water (mostly mud).  It looks like the leaf is starting to dry out :frown: so i pushed it down a little further.  I think it got chilly.  I was reading that they can stay in sand and water for over five weeks.

I'm pretty sure I lost mine :frown:, going back to drawing board, sand and water over floor vent, change water every day.
