Worm castings- pic and ?

i spawned 5 pounds of worm castings with 3 PF style cakes. it colonized like crazy, in like 5 days. but now i'm having the same problems i once had with straw - the pins start up like crazy but never reach full size. i figure it could either be some sort of internal contaminant or possibly not enough nutrition in the substrate. any ideas?

If you're concerned with nutrition, try mixing the castings with compost or grain. Your pinheads may not be developing becaue of poor air exchange.

Too humid? Did you cease misting once the pins appeared?

hmmm.... i had a similar problem with my castings...they were growing really small for some reason, even smaller than yours. then, i just put a casing layer of verm on top and walah, shrooms were growing between the ranges of 6 - 9 inches within a few days.

i doubt it's the air exchange. i have the coolmist running constantly. and if anything, the humidity feels too low, not too high. i just checked again and 90% are now aborted. shit.

If your substrate is shallow; regardless of how nutritious your substrate is, yallz will get small pinners.

Do you have a hygrometer to measure humidity? If you've got your humidifier running 24/7 in a rather small grow chamber, there's a chance that the humidity will plateau and not increase. When I have mine attached to a 10 or 20 gallon fishtank going for 24/7, humidity plateaus at 75%. However, when I have it on a timer, 14 times a day for 1 minute on low or medium speed, humidity stays just above 90%. Maybe that's the problem, since I had the same happen when I started off. Since all humidifiers are different, you may need to tinker around to see what you need to do to reach optimal humidity.

matty, i don't understand the logic. 24/7 gives me 75% humidity and 14 minutes a day gives me 90%? not sure how it computes.

When I had my humidifier on 24/7, there was a ton of air blowing into my small grown chamber, even when I had the humidifier on low. I tried a few other things to boost humidity, such as extra spraying, but none of it worked. In a last ditch effort, I thought maybe all that air blowing around in my grow chamber was keeping the humidity down instead of keeping it up. When I got a timer and had the humidifier go on every hour and 45 minutes for one minute each time, humidity actually went up. I know it doesn't sound logical, but all I can figure is that it has something to do with too much air blowing around in there. But like I said in my previous post, you may have to experiment in order to get the right humidity level.
