Found these growing on my driveway; Friendly?
    #3804137 - 02/19/05 07:48 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I found these growing between a cement crack on my driveway. It has been and is raining in my town in Nor Cal, and these little devils popped up out of no where. They are no bigger than 2 inches. There are different ones other then them too, which I will post pics of later if needed. Im a shroomery 'newb' so if they are totally un-psychedelic please don't shove it in my face  :tongue2:

Sorry for darkness, all I have right now is a crappy web cam. The caps are brown and the stem is white.

Welcome belphegor,

The only thing I can say for certain is that they are mushrooms. You need to describe them better. This is from the Hunting Forum rules sticky.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2263556/an/0/page/0
------------------------------------
II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

General appearance suggests a species from the coprinus genus, but I could be all wrong at that. More information and/or better pics are required for a better ID.

Oh, your mushrooms are 99% sure not psychedelic or even edible. Still a nice find though

Thanks for the help and the welcome guys. Not psychedelic huh? I figured.  Yesterday I went shroom hunting on a farm (Northern California again) and found some more. These were growing in/or around cow poo and grass. The cap is caramel colored brown and the stem is kind of hallow and about the same color but a little whiter. It's an inch long. It smells like crayons. Definitley not a mushroom smell.

First of all, do you even know which type of psilocybe mushroom you're hunting for?? From these poor-quality pics, I'd guess that you're searching for psilocybe cyanescens, but then again why you'd be specificly searching for cyans in cow pastures is beyond me.

At any rate, I am also 99% sure that these are not "friendly" shrooms. That bottom pic of yours shows the true color of the stem (I see a copperish tone, which is not good). Stems on cyanescens are very recognizable; their stems are solid/firm, white, and almost always bruise blue intensely upon handling.

Identification of little brown mushrooms requires spore print.

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

Pupenhause - I'm not retarded, and my eyesight is fair enough, so yeah I did read his original post clearly. He never said specificly that he was looking for Cyans, but from his pics I gather that he was searching for them (since those shrooms in the pics *roughly* resemble cyanescens)...basically his non-actives here resemble non-actives I was finding when I first began hunting for cyans.

welcome
Belphegor
the 1st thing you are going to need if you are out in the wild trying to find cubes is a little luck. 2nd you should have a good pocket sized identification book ( check out the sponsors forum, you will find one there ) 3rd - even w/ a book be very carefull, cubes are hard to identify in my opinion. if you see an amanita you will know but cubes are a lot tougher. good luck !
