Anyone know for sure what temp the Food Saver bags melt at?
    #3803398 - 02/19/05 03:40 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I was thinking that a food saver bag would be a hell of a good container to put poo in and then sterilize. I wonder if the seal would break apart at higher temps though. I know you can boil them alright. Anyone know what temp they melt at?

One of the problems with foodsaver bags is that at higher temps the two sides will seal together if there is no material between them. Ie, you can't fill a bag half way and fold the top half down without the sides melting together.
If you want to use a bag to paturize (you don't want to sterilize) the poo, I would recommend an oven bag over a food saver bag.
They hold more material, the sides won't melt together and you can get an oven bag at any grocery store.

The whole point of using a food saver bag is that it would be sealed. This way you could sterilize the poo and inoculate straight into the bag. An additional bonus would be no smell.

why sterilise poo? just pasteurize it.

I figured that getting rid of everything would be easier. As long as it was going to be sealed anyway, why not sterilize? That way the spores would have no competition and there wouldn't be(as long as you kept it sterile) hardly any chance for contam.

So it looks like i'm just going to have to experiment.

the problem with those bags is that there would be no gas exchange, I already
tried it a few years ago before I knew much about mushroom cultivation.

Bullshit. It smelled horrible. I've already tried pasturizing it oven bags sealed as tight as I could get it. Trust me, it smells.

I didn't think about that. I gave up on this idea anyway.
