have you seen a contam appear (jar was 90% colonized) and then the myc takes over and colonizes completely....

havent cut em oipen to smell yet, but it looks promising.

Ok, I have an addition to this question. Is it safe to use that grain if that happens? I'm worried there could be toxins in the grain that get transferred to the mushrooms later. What do you think? I have a jar that is 95% colonized, but on the very bottome is a thin layer (mabye one grain thick) of uncolonized grain sitting on top of cloudy mats of mycelium. It literally looks like they are floaing on top of the cloud. They have not been overtaken, and it doesn't look like its going to happen in the future either.

I have had it happen on agar plates from wild prints. It is just an amazing thing when it happens

If you spot a contam in a closed grain jar, or when you open it. trash can tek is applicable. Healthy white myc can overrun / overgrow a contam spot. But, that doesnt mean there are no viable contam spores in the white jar. Best - IMHO.... to be safe...rather than very sorry..... later.

Get a sterile spoon and scoop out the healthy mycelium leaving the suspect myc well alone. I've done that quite a few times and not had any problems.
