Why do mushrooms grow so fast in nature but so slow when home grown?

I day or so after it rains, shrooms pop up everywhere. Is this because the given medium (tree bark, cow shit, whatever) is already colonized?

Yes, if the mushrooms are fruiting, the given medium is colonized. Also, they are not so susceptible to contams as nature has natural buffers.
