How do you get mycelium out of pint jars that have shoulders?
    #3800968 - 02/18/05 11:23 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Do you just stick a sterilized spoon in there and scoop it out?

I take a steralized knife and just slice the cake into 1/4s or even 1/8ths then just pull one out with the knife, the others will follow easily.

Mycelium, yoiu jump to conclusions too fast. Maybe he was using wide mouth quart jars, which still have shoulders, thus the question he asked.

You're exactly right, frog. I mistakenly wrote pint in the question.

Why go through all that and have a chance of breaking the jar and contaming your cake when it goes every where. I have not seen a tek that has suggested that. Most have said to cut it with a sterilized knife or spoon it out.

Oh, I'll be using the brown rice flour (kernels?). And I've done this before, I've just never used wide-mouthed quart jars with shoulders, and I wasn't sure if stabbing the mycelium would be harmful.

Your doing BRF in quart jars??? That would take forever to colonize. You should think about moving on to grains.

bro,

don't use BRF/Verm in quart jars.

if you wanna use BRF/Verm...use 1/2 pint and pint size jars.
Quart jars would be a mother fucker to get colonized...and they might fail.

If you wanna use Quart jars...go with using WBS, Rye grain, Popcorn, Millet...etc.

OK, thanks for the advice! I've only ever done half-pints but I just figured since I had some quart jars lying around I could make things easier for myself by doing 4 jars instead of 16.
