Jux hit it on the head. Your striving to know is your own ego stabbing you in the back when you trip. Just let it be.

OK you guys talk amongst yourselves cause obviously you don't really want to help me at all. You're all just getting a big boner outta hearing yourselves make plays on words. Sorry, I don't buy it. I hear the message behind your words, but you really oughta cut the crap. Baffle him with bullshit, right? I got assholes PM'ing me and telling me I'm a dope and here you guys are trying to tell me you're better than me. LOL. What did I expect? Asking a bunch of drug users for spiritual advice. What a joke. Sorry to those of you who were sincere, but your friends, they are eating you alive! Take a bite outa that one, you hacks. And post counts don't impress me. So take em and shove them in a dark place. Get off the computer and try to bring yourselves back to earth. hehe

OK guys it's chorus time!

Don't take it so hard man, I don't think it was nearly as personal as you made it to be.

As for the looping: it's very typical and obviously has something to do with the way the mind works. Think of ticks, people washing their hands every chance they get, or phrases they keep repeating ad infinitum.

There may be a tendency but I think its very important how you reinforce it. If you think: "oh no, I'll NEVER get out of this" it will linger for a long time. There are striking parallels between the psychedelic and the hypnosis state. Hypersuggestibility.

The most logical thing I can think of is the thing you experience with microphones & speakers: You say something, the speaker blurts it out, the mike picks it up, speaker-mike-speaker-mike cycling faster and faster until you get a deafening w00t!

Perhaps the division between transmitting and recieving blurs and its mostly a feedback loop of an organic nature.

The way to break it is to do something completely different. If it is speech, be silent. If it's the same racing thought over and over, have someone pound you with talk of their hobby
This is where a good trip guide comes in!

Sounds good Wiccan_Seeker. Though sometimes, I think there can be no way to break the loop on such a high dose. It is kind of neat to be in a loop but it quickly escalates into something one no longer wants. I swear, be careful about who you put your tripping self in the hands of. Some people are cool but would not be a good trip guide. It needs to be someone that sincerely cares for you and is only there to help a friend out, not doing the chore of babysitting you.

The first time I ever really got high on anything (and the last) was when I ate a brownie my friend gave me. I was told it just had weed it in, which may be true, but it was pretty intense. I didn't even eat a whole brownie and after an hour, I was feeling pretty weird. Things looked like they were popping out at me, and I could easily see the red green and blue pixels of the computer monitor from far away. I tried to explain to my girlfriend what it was like, and it didn't seem like she was paying attention, so I would repeat it. Not once could she pay attention the whole time (it got really frustrating) so I kept repeating it over and over. She said I must've said it well over 20 times, and I didn't even realize it. I couldn't stop either. She was sober, but she definitely wasn't even trying to help me out. She started getting mad at me and totally made me feel like shit. I think that if she actually listened one whole time, I would've felt much better and just stopped, but I can't say for sure.

I might as well explain what I was trying to tell her to someone, so here it goes: I felt as though time was branching off into many different directions. Some branches running parallel to each other, some weaving in and out, and some looping. I felt like I was switching back and forth between branches constantly, never staying on one path.

mmmmm brownies. If you hadn't ever been high before, then a bud brownie would definately work wonders. It's not really that uncommon for THC to cause people to hallucinate, at least it happens every once and again.
Now to this post's actual question...
As far as understanding the scientific specifics of psilocybin's effects, well some of these things aren't meant to be tackled. At least not while you're actually tripping! Sheesh if Im going to apply scientific knowledge to solving great mysteries of the unknown, well I might just wait til AFTER the trip's over

Honestly, the advise of "letting go" and "not fighting the trip" is of sound knowledge (and probably experience of having used the opposite mindset and failing miserably). It's best to just be crazy when on these types of drugs. No that doesn't condone throwing your cat out of a 10 story apartment building window, or calling up your boss to tell him you've found all the answers and don't need a 9 - 5 anymore. But it means that these drugs promote some crazy behaviors at times; it's normal to have your mind loop out, or to become comically forgetful (hallucinogens can really affect the short term memory when tripping). So if these common symptoms bother you to an unbearable point when tripping, then maybe you should stop tripping.

If you realllly just wanna break that loop, it's really not that hard. Like Wiccan Seeker said, you just HAVE to switch gears spontaneously somehow. This could mean you start singing a song, juggle some freaking apples, bust out some cartwheels if you must (be careful of course), just be SPONTANEOUS! By doing this you are taking a bit of control back from that little place in your brain that's stuck on a repetitive thought.

Of course, sometimes, there is just no breaking the loop. Sometimes you just need to ride that wave of concsiousness out. When the loop is that strong, just ride it man. Embrace the words that your mind is repeating. Give them some kind of meaning, hell, you might even learn something out of them. Many people find profound phrases or concepts during these strange thought cycles.

Luck is bullshit, so I'll just wish you the best.

Maybe I should have asked for ways to shake the loop, cause Wiccan just helped me hit an epiphany!
As simple as it sounds, I don't think I really ever think to do something spontaneous when tripping. Especially when I'm getting freaked out. Lately, being couped up inside doesn't help.
I've noticed that I like to stare out the window at my yard in the darkness. But while I do it, I get an erie feeling that well, kinda scares me. I am drawn outside, but I'm afraid of what I might run into out there. It's all really kinda funny and silly as I sit here typing, but it happens. I need to come up with some knee-jerk reactions to put in action when I sense this feeling comming on. Maybe I need to quit tripping indoors. I'll be going to Florida in a few weeks to trip with my brother in-law, so I can be outside.
Also the advice to be crazy, simple idea, but hard to do. It's very ironic because when we used to do Lucy we'd always try to come up with reasons why we did the things we did, but it always just came down to "we're clinically insane! duh!". I just need to relish in the insanity I think.
I'm just afraid in the back of my mind it might not stop! However, I'm working on getting past that.
This is a great discussion we're having here and I'm glad to see there are others who may be benefitting.
Thanks

Singing is one of the best ways to turn a bad trip right around. How many great ideas can Terence McKenna have? :ooo:

Just sing from your heart, like a wolf lamenting the desecration of his mother earth.

Don't worry about words or anything, just make some sounds that soothe your soul.

I can only do this when I'm on my own in a secluded place.

I think Mecreatme is on to something when he suggests our lives are circular patterns. Long long ago the chinese noticed the phenomenon and developed the yin and yang. It is all encompassing of life. Just as sure as happiness will turn to sadness, and back to happiness, so will winter will turn to spring. Life is a cycle, such is our thought pattern. I think psychedelics merely make your consciousness more aware of it.

well psychedelics dont just make us aware of these cycles, but rather they have a tendency to INTENSIFY the cycles in a seemingly comical way.

The question, though, is: what to do about it? I mean, do you go on living in the circular pattern that is reality and you do the same things over and over again with your friends and loved ones? Once you realize it is all the same things over and over again, do you just go on with the game as we always do? That seems to be the only answer that I can come up with. Keeping the game going is the nature of the game.

First off, I think some people are more prone to circular thought than others. I rarely, if ever, continue thinking about the same things. *Well, unless you count "where's my beer" or "where's my lighter"*. But a friend of mine is always mesmerized by his own circular thoughts.

Your question, "what can we do about it?", is not an easy one. Some cycles will continue without disregard (seasons), while others are nearly under your control(thought patterns)? Do what they say, and change it up. MUSIC always works wonders for me. Close your eyes, and ride the snake...
