A good story about racism
    #3800012 - 02/18/05 08:22 PM (12 years, 10 days ago)

I went to go play some Raquetball the other day and while I was waiting for a court to open up, i just watched a good match between this tall black guy, and this wiry, short white guy through the plexiglass. There was this little 12 year old kid watching it also, and he had been there before I was. So I ask him who was winning and he said , "The tall guy" without thought. It didnt hit me until a little later that most people would have said "the black guy", but this kid saw his height as the most distinguished trait and not the color of his skin. Thought I would share this story, because it is simple yet moving in some ways.

You're right...I probably would have said "the black guy."

But I don't think that makes me racist.  It's just a descriptor.

I guess it could be considered racist because white guys don't say "the white guy" when referring to white guys.

Nice story though.  It's reassuring when you see little kids without any of the "social stains" that we have.

thats cute...i most likely would have used race as the describing indicator, unless the height differential was like 6'6" to 5'4"....

There are two ways to get to the top of an oak tree: start climbing or sit on an acorn.

Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?

That's a pretty good anecdote.

I too dont' believe using race as a descriptor is neccessarily bad. In most cases, a quick visual reference is ok, and race is a pretty obvious factor.

In this case, though, in an athletic contest, height is more relevant than race. So it seems natural that the kid would have focused on that aspect.

I wasnt saying that you are racist if you use color as a description. The story just has a nice point about no matter how un-racist you think you are, that description of black or white shouldnt stand out any more than the description of height.

It's just generational differences. Racism isn't a real force, it will go away with time. As more and more generations are exposed to equality then equality will become the dominant ideal. It just takes time.

I think it's surprising how much emphasis people put on height. I've heard that the most important moment in a political debate is when the candidates shake hands because most people will vote for the taller guy.

What is this? It is a prolate spheroid, an elongated sphere in which the outer leather casing is drawn tightly over a somewhat smaller rubber tubing. Better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football.

-John Heisman

"I didn’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was (positioned)," Newton told reporters in Charlotte on Tuesday. "It could have been contorted in a way. You say my effort? I didn’t dive down. I fumbled - that’s fine. That’s fine. We didn’t lose the game because of that fumble.”

-Scam Newton
