if you use Knox(brand name) geletan,not jelly you will have ok results,you still would have to add malt or PDA just as you do to agar,but it would work to a degree.it used to be used back in the day.

yeah i've wondered about using pectin myself (i believe thats the binding agent in jelly , is it not?)

you would treat it axactly as agar.just follow the recipe in the tek section of this site but substitute that for the agar.
As far as honey goes i would think that would lead to contamination trouble,i wouldnt but you could use PDA.remember it doesnt work as good as agar,howevr it does work,and thats what we use to use,just follow the teks exactly except substitute that in.

I experimented wit beef boullion and unflavored gelletan, it works but gelletan has a very short lifespan at room temps, expect 3-4 days maximum.
