"In the name of Jesus," - what happened to me at Walmart
    #3799873 - 02/18/05 07:55 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Today I had to go buy groceries at Walmart.  I had about 6 $5 gift certificates and it is the cheapest place I know of to buy food (and I'm broke right now) so off I went.

I got only the bare essentials.  The entire time, I kept thinking about how much I hated Walmart.  Most people were rude and obnoxious. I mean...you'd think if you said "excuse me" enough people would get the hint that you want them to move their ass out of the way.

Anyway, I end up at the register.  The guy rings up my groceries, and it comes up to $20 dollars extra.  No problem, I think, and get out my checkbook.  I knew that we had some money in the bank so I figured I would just write a check for the rest and leave.

Nope.  My check is denied.  I am first surprised, and then angry, wondering what happened.  The lady next to me (about 30ish) is watching me chew out the guy, and then afterwards she goes in close and says, "You know, I've been there...waiting for that approval.  He's just doing his job, you know."

And I say, "Yeah, I know.  It's just so frustrating."  Then, out of nowhere, I start to cry.

I don't know what came over me, but tears were pouring out, making me look and feel very pathetic.  The cashier talks to his manager and the manager says that there is nothing more they can do once the check has been denied.  He said that I could pay with a debit card, but my husband had it, so there was nothing I can do.  "What am I supposed to do?" I ask the manager between sobs.  "My husband has my card.  I thought the check would go through and I already paid for half these groceries with the gift card."

I was feeling pretty wretched at this point.

Then the lady next to me jumps in and says, "I'll pay the rest."

I look at her in shock and say, "I couldn't ask that of you."

And she shakes her head and says rather fiercely, "In the name of Jesus, I have to do this.  I know how it feels.  In the name of Jesus."  And she gives her card to the cashier.

I didn't know what to say.  She paid for $20 worth of my groceries.  I mean, that's kinda a big deal.  And she was so selfless about it.  It really taught me a valuable lesson today.  I'll probably remember that experience for the rest of my life.

See, good CAN come from Walmart.

Was she self-righteous about it? If she was then I suspect she was doing it just to look high-and-mighty... if not then that lady is nice as hell and a stand-up Christian.

You started crying? There's your proof that WAL-MART is the devil... no other store could provoke such a response.

EVIL!!!!!

That's awesome. I've been there too, and it sucks to say the least. Thank goodness for kind-hearted people.

No, she wasn't self-righteous at all, just understanding about it.

I wouldn't care if she had been self-righteous.  She did more today for me then many Christians do in their lives.  Just goes to prove that you can't judge every Christian by their..."cover."

I wouldn't pay $20 to look high and mighty.

In the name of Jesus...mind you she said in the name of Jesus...not human kindness. What would jesus do is a sad thing...why not ask "what should I do.."

It was nice no doubt...just too bad it was in the name of jesus and not your helplessness!

That's a really good point.
Not "In the name of peace/love/humanity/generosity."
It has to be Jesus.
Why not what we should do, not what their savior would do?

Why? If she said that I would find her much more interesting. The action is the same no matter what. Would you think it was less genuine if she had said that?

was just joking man, didn't mean anything serious. I think saying in the name of anybody is pretty funny though when you're paying for someone's groceries.

Yeah! Strange huh!? This is one reason why i think religion can be harmful- people don't do actions based on their own reasoning...instead they do it because they want to go to heaven or not to hell. It is such a simple method of existing.

With religion, all the answers are given to people...they don't have to think about their selves. They just do as Jesus tells them... though they may come to the same conclusions that one may reach who has thought about what they should do...they are zombies....slaves...see what i mean?

You shouldnt look a gift horse in the mouth. Of someone does something selfless like that you shouldnt get into semantics on why they did it. She in the name of Jesus was helping out a fellow person. Be glad their is people in the world like that.

A little generosity and kindness from your fellow man is nice every once in a while. I've had people step up for me in times of need and I always try to retun the favor.

Today I was in a mini-market. Some guy was buying a couple items and getting some gas. Just as he was paying for his stuff his daughter (about 7 years old) said "Daddy, can I have some chips?". The dad handed her a dollar of his change and went out to pump gas. The little girl grabbed a bag of chips and set them on the counter. The cashier rang it up, looked at the girl, and said "That'll be $1.29 sweetie". The girl sheepishly held out the dollar. She obviously had no more and dad was out at the pumps. I immediately grabbed the handful of change in my pocket and nodded to the cashier. The cashier took the dollar, said thank you, and the little girl skipped out the door as happy as a clam as I finished paying.

It was such a small gesture, and the little girl may not have even realized what happened, but I felt like a million bucks as I walked out. I'm sure that the woman who helped you with your troubles today felt that same joy. Sharing always makes me happy.
