I thought that was just for the story within Crossroads....? A blues player *should* not have to sell their soul for talent, they are already in their own little hell, called the blues.... Expression of sadness and dispair thru music....

As an interesting little sidenote, Son House started the rumour that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. Johnson played in front of Son House and wasn't really very impressive, then a year or so later played to him again (having greatly improved), and House said something along the lines of "He must've sold his soul to the devil to play like that". I studied blues last year, interesting little genre really.

Robert Johnson's pact with the devil
Famously, Johnson sold his soul to the devil in order to play guitar like a demon. You want prima facie evidence? How about 'Me and the Devil Blues', and the fact that young Robert was a poor guitarist whose improvement was remarkable. Actually, he used that little known voodoo technique 'practice', and was tutored by a bluesman called Ike Zimmerman. Not Satan.
