enlightenment and suffering
    #3795712 - 02/17/05 09:21 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

i've heard enlightenment defined as the end of suffering and i completely understand how it would end mental suffering, but what about physical suffering? i've heard enlightened people still have unpleasant sensations, does this not constiute suffering? if an enlightened person contracted a horrible disease would he not suffer? on the other hand i've heard that enlightened people can exist in a state of samadhi where they are not conscious of their bodies and so there is no suffering. so which is it? or can they only remain in samadhi while physically inactive? in my own experience i know it's possible to escape physical suffering mentally because i remember once being sick and having a dream and in the dream i felt well. (ive also had a dream when i was well and felt sick). it seemed as long as i was able to hold onto to sleep i could escape the pain of my illness but as soon as waking would come i could not escape it. can anyone clarify?

There is a difference between pain and suffering.

When I broke my finger, boy did I ever feel pain. But I minimized suffering from that situation.

In other words, one could say that pain is the body's reaction to certain sensory input, whereas suffering stems from the ego's resistance to current situations.

What you resist, persists.

pain is necessary in life. to suffer is optional. an enlightened being still feels pain, but does not relate to that pain out of ignorance or with the perception of suffering. an enlightened being would also be unnatached to the body that it inhabits.

The distinction between pain and suffering is important. Pain is an unpleasant physical sensation, and suffering is the anxiety which it can produce. The enlightened person could be in pain, but not suffering if he were at peace with his pain. However, I do not believe that this state of total peace can be permanent. Even the Buddha has his moments of anxiety, and I am quite certain that Jesus suffered during his ultimate act of love.

no.

as defined by buddhist scriptures, enlightenment is not the end of suffering. final nirvana is the end of karma, or the end of suffering.

enlightenment is an awakening - awareness of the true nature of reality throughout one's day.

People here express themselves as they feel they wish to express themselves. Is this wrong?
