question about mushroom size
    #3796130 - 02/17/05 10:46 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, i know the whole omg why am i getting small mushrooms has been asked and played out and it seems most have problems with cakes, not casings, but i seem to end up with smaller mushrooms myself with the veil breaking and growth stall after 1 to 2 inches. I use WBS, a quart per casing, spawned to straw in a 9X12 by about 2 inches thick with about a 50/50 casing layer of verm/coco. I fruit it at 72 to 74 degrees F. at about 80 percent humidity, i have an air pump to supply air and i fan also for added exchange. So i guess what i'm wondering is.. do i maybe need to aid lime for ph balance?, maybe more substrate per casing?, maybe thicker casings? This also seems to happen regardless of strain, have done B=, pr's, and gt's. Thanks for any input that may help me on my quest to better my techniques.

Maybe try a larger substrate layer. I believe you want to shoot for a 3" substrate and a 1" casing layer...that should produce larger fruits.

Im about 80% sure about this so someone correct me if im wron0

Seen that, but was different circumstance, and didn't really fit into this same catagory as my problem.

I dont know. How thick is your casing layer. I have always been under the impression that a thicker substrate produces larger fruits. Could it be the specific strain? Do you get small fruits but a good overall yeild? Or just small shrooms with equally small yeild?

bulk substrates like straw and manure will give larger fruits, esp. if the substrate layer is thicker.

Well i am managing to get about 1 oz dry per flush because there so many of em, so maybe it's not all that bad? From reading, it seems 1 oz per flush isn't bad, so i'll keep it a work in progress and see if i can get em bigger and yield even more. Thanks for the suggestions.

you could have a strain that has been mutated from too many g2gs. i believe i have a mutated orissa strain. excellent pinset but the mushies rarely grow taller than 3 inches.
