Breeding new strains?
    #3793668 - 02/17/05 04:10 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but I was wondering what would happen if I injected a cake with 2-5 different types of strain syringes before casing? Would I create a new breed/mixture or would it just create a certain percentage of one strain and a certain percentage of the others??

one strain would take over and colonize the whole thing, good luck

I doupt one strain would take over but you wouldnt make a new strain. Most likely get a few different shrooms off of the cake.
It would be more like this

That is with a casing. When putting multiple strains on a cake the one that colonizes fastest will usually take over the entire cake. However you could get both strains growing on a single cake.

Mushrooms aren't plants, they don't breed, they are asexual. The only way to create a new strain is through mutation/evolution, not through breeding.

Wtf are you talking about? You contradict yourself. First you say that you can with a casing then you say you can't with a cake then you say you can with a cake. Obviously you are still learning, not so avidly i might add. The mycel would meet up. Each might have a different foothold on the nutrients but if it had access to nutrients it should fruit different mushroom.

Ummm....no.

If you look at the pic you can tell that he cased two seperate cakes, one on each side of the casing since the strains are separate as opposed to intermingled if he would have mixed them.

And I said "When putting multiple strains on a cake the one that colonizes fastest will usually take over the entire cake. However you could get both strains growing on a single cake."

If you check the definition of usually you will see that it doesn't mean all the time. If you inoculate a jar with multiple strains in each hole, or just close to each other, the faster colonizer will tend to overtake the entire jar and it will produce only a single strain of fruits. HOWEVER, if you inoculate two sides of the jar with two different strains it is possible that they will both get a decent sized foothold on the substrate and be able to produce fruits from each strain.

It all depends on how you inoculate the cake. Either way, you will not get the mushrooms to "breed".

There is a slight possibility that spores from each strain could germinate together and produce a hybrid mycelial strand but the whole fo the mycelial body would not be a hydrid and would not produce hybrid mushrooms.

ummm No....
saying that a strain would take over is like saying that the ports would take over on the buttons or vise versa. When a strain has a foot hold it will stay. So wether you have a casing with 1/2 gt and 1/2 b+ side by side or a cake that was incoulated with 2-4 strains that each had some foot hold and cased it you would most likely have the same results. Multiple strains coming out of the same casing.

I bet the different mushrooms will use the others mycelium. You can pick a mushroom and put it back in the casing and it will contiue to grow. I bet you could pick a b+ and put it on a gt casing.

The mycelium will fight for the foothold. One will win, one wont win. plain and simple.

i think what smushroom meant was that:
if you were to inoculate , lets say, a single jar with different strains...one of the strains (most likely the quicker colonizing (although they should colonize at a SOMEWHAT similar rate, depending on temps etc.)) will take over colonizing the cake, therefore the other one will be nullified.

second part:
while CASING two different strains, if you were to case a b+ and a cambo together, they will grow -considering mycel. has already been formed and there is no need to fight for room considering they've already 'claimed' their part of the substrate. with that said, if one cake was crumbled with b+ on one side, and the cambo crumbled on the other and cased together, most likely they'll both grow , respectively to their sides.

i think thats a little clearer interpretation to smushroom's post. correct me if im wrong...IM JUST TRYING TO END THE MADNESS!!!
