these are the entries in apache2.conf

this means that it should only start 5 processes, correct?

# StartServers ......... number of server processes to start
<IfModule prefork.c>
StartServers        5
MinSpareServers      5
MaxSpareServers    10
MaxClients          20
MaxRequestsPerChild  0
</IfModule>

does this mean that there should only be 2 processes when i start apache?

# StartServers ......... initial  number of server processes to start
<IfModule worker.c>
StartServers        2
MaxClients        150
MinSpareThreads    25
MaxSpareThreads    75
ThreadsPerChild    25
MaxRequestsPerChild  0
</IfModule>

when i stop apache, and then start it again, i always have the same amount of processeses.
Is this normal?

And another question for you guys.

my modem has to be configured with a web browser at 192.???.?.?
If i put "localhost" in to the browser I get the apache test page
If i put my ip into the browser ??.??.???.?? i get the configuration page for the modem.

If i try to access it from another comp, at the library, i put my ip in the browser
and it gives me an error message "page cannot be displayed"
I don't know it its the apache configuration, or if the modem wants port 80 all to its self. I've looked all through the modem config and haven't found anything that would indicate that it is raping me for port 80
I had it working with fedora c1 and apache 1.3* so i don't think its the modem

i'm lost. this sucks.
i've been stuck here for over a month
i don't know where to start.
I can't afford a book right now
Does anyone know of any good online resources.
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/    has been useless.
http://www.onlamp.com/apache/    also no good

i don't know where to go

  :sad: :sad:  :cussing: :badcomputer:

Do you need apache2? You might want to try apache.
