Calif. to Distribute Medical Marijuana ID Cards February 17, 2005 jointogether.org
Medical-marijuana user ID cards will be issued in California starting this summer to prevent legitimate users from facing arrest or seizure of their drugs, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Feb. 16.
The cards will be available statewide by end of the year, and will have photographs and a phone number that police can call to verify the card's authenticity. California would become the sixth state to issue ID cards to medical-marijuana users, joining Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.
Medical-marijuana users have sued the California Highway Patrol over seizures of marijuana from individuals holding a doctor's prescription for the drug. A police spokesperson said such seizures would continue until the ID cards are issued.
The $1.5-million cost of the ID program will be recouped through fees charged to cardholders.
A pilot ID-card program will be launched this summer in Amador, Del Norte, Trinity, Mendocino, Marin, Shasta, Sacramento, Sonoma, Santa Cruz and Yuba counties.
