Well it would be a shock to the system...with digestion, psilocybin is gradually absorbed, whereas with injection it goes from not being in the bloodstream to suddenly being in the bloodstream. It's not a gradual opening of the doors of perception, it would be like a TNT charge placed at the door.

Hmm, I think you are right that they injected mushroom tea. Although they must have boiled it down quite a bit...imagine injecting an entire cup of tea...hell just diluting your blood that much couldn't be good. And if they did dose the tea, then I would guess that perhaps through oral or anal ingestion, the body is able to break down or metabolize various alkaloids that could be toxic, but by injecting it, the body was inable to properly break them down.
