I dont think that perlite and water produce heat. Usually enclosed objects, such as a terrium with a lid, have a habit of picking up heat from the normal air and staying slightly warmer. However, I do know that growing mycellium produces a little heat but I dont think it could be enough to affect the tempature of your terrium.

>, I do know that growing mycellium produces a little heat but >I dont think it could be enough to affect the tempature of >your terrium. Oh, it does, it does. Think about it: about 50% of the substrate mass are converted to CO2 and water during the timespan of the mushroom cycle(from spawning till dumping). That means that if you have a casing of 100g rye, 50 grams rye are "burned" to energy. The heating value of 50 g rye is app 200kcal, enough to heat 10 liter[app.10qt) water from 20?C(68?F) to 40?C(104?F). Or app 40 kg air from 20?C to 40?C. 40 kg[107lbt) air is app. 40 cubic meters, equals 1412 cubic ft.!!! One part of this energy is used to vaporize water though so not all of it goes into heating your terrarium and surroundings. --------------------------------------- kickme.to/mushrooms Edited by Anno on 08/26/01 04:54 PM.
