making agar from scratch

Hey I know the basics of PDA from reading and all that. I have some questions purely on agar, since I can get it for dirt cheap from health food stores vs myco/mushroom stores is that ok. I normally am not this cheap, but I seems I could just put agar, dextrose and potato broth and have kick ass agar media.

I have been using honey water and I guess I could use that as a liquid grow medium nutrient or karo with agar? Since all agar is essentially is a product that turns to gelitan with water. I thought the plates were all solid inside lol, its like jello.

So the basic question: Food grade agar is comparable to commerical agar by fungi perfecti and sporeworks, etc. ?

Food grade agar has small amounts of salt in it, lab grade agar has the salt better removed and is from a different species of seaweed.

I recently switched from food grade agar to lab grade and i can see the difference in growth rate.

The growth on the food grade was decent however?

the food grade agar was fine, used it for 2 years. But the lab grade gives stronger growth and is about 20% faster with growing.

Yes, this will work just fine IMEO. You can also add a gram of nutritional yeast to 500mL H2O, to top it off...

With the success dude has had from the health food store type, there hasn't been much need to use lab grade, but I would bet it is even better like anand said...

I am now getting into PTC, so this is soon to change.
