If you are fairly new to agar I recommend you pour it and let it sit for 3 days to make sure you did not contaminate it.

When agar starts to solidify it will tighten up and shrink a bit. If it starts to pull away from the sides of petri plate then you are not using enough h2o

If you're storing petri dishes, make sure to seal them with parafilm or whatever type of tape you can find. Keep them up-side-down so that the water that condenses won't cause problems. When making your mixtures, you want to use about 3% agar at the most. I use 11 grams per 400 ml water.

The amount Stamets uses is 20 g per liter, I use from 15-20 g per liter, depending on agar grade and the recipe.
Normaly it shouldn?t shrink after pouring, but it shrinks when it dries out much.

i'm using peroxidated agar, 8 grams each 500ml.
also i noted that right after it solidifies some water is "squeezed" from the agar.
another question: when liquified, you agar have a "fish" smell?
i think i got very low grade agar, maybe i should try another source.
