i have a pf cake with the pf classic strain in a perlite rubbermaid. fan it 3 times a day and it gets about 30 mins of light a day. the first shroom to grow started to grow out to one side and then started to grow towards the bottom of the container (it didnt just lean over with weight it grew towards the bottom). it matured fully with a lumpy stem near the cap. the cap was upside down resting on a piece of plastic i put on the perlite. i cut it off and it weighed 14 grams. any ideas what caused this to grow like this??

Hi, I always think it's funny when that happens. I had a Cambodian Cube grow upside down on a casing once. Mycelia were coiming from the tip of the cap. Good stuff. I Forgot about some cakes once and decided to birth them anyway. Most if not all mushrooms grew out upside down. There'd be a cap, then the stem, and the end of the stem would become bulbous and finish in the shape of a cap. I harvested many dumbell shaped shrooms. In that case, I'd blame the sheer age of the cakes for the mutations.

Yeah I had a b+ where the cap was in the casing and the stem grew upwards. That was an odd casing.

Mushrooms grow towards light. You must have either been using perlite humidification or had a light color on the bottom of your terrium that your mushrooms became attracted to. Basically, you mushrooms thought that was up because it was light. When a mushroom grows in the wild it uses the light to sense when it has reached the top of its substrate. Since mushrooms have been growing for longer than we have, they have evolved to do this.
