The Collective
    #3789810 - 02/16/05 05:19 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I was debating whether to post this here or in PAL, as there are great political implications to this question, but I decided that if I posted it here, it might stay more on topic and address the question itself and not so much the implications of it. Basically, my question is this: Is there such a thing as a collective of people which is different than the individuals of which it is comprised? Can it have a different agenda, different wants and needs, and behave differently than those individuals? How? Where does it come from?

Are you asking about collective consciousness? Or collective will?

Group think? It seems like simple sociology - a strong leader can strong-arm his way to the top of many groups and control the agenda with force and power. Caesar did it, Lenin did it, Hitler did it, and now some would say Bush (or whoever is truly controlling his agenda) is doing it.

A single individual american may not be willing to put a bullet in a man's face or toss shrapnel into an infant's body- but sure as hell if Americans aren't for kickin' ass overseas! MADE IN AMERICA BABY. People just get so excited to be a part of something powerful that they get caught up in it and stop thinking. Whether it be a willfull hysteria and excitement (Lenin and the Bolshevik revolution) or a fear-induced hysteria (Bush and the terrorism debacle) people will end up following what everyone else is doing in a state of panic or uproar.

In my opinion anyway...

It seems what you're talking about there is conformity and the power of persuasion. That's just one individual's will projected onto the masses. What I'm talking about is a collective will which is independent of any one of its members.

I can't think of one except maybe a relationship between two lovers which has gone sour yet neither are willing to admit it and so they continue dating in the spirit of being together but really just barricaded on the inside.

I've heard from some sources about how corporations can become entities which commit injustices which no one member of it necessarily supports, but I'm not sure how much truth there is in that.
