Just yesterday I was helping someone tie down a load on the back of a pickup.  I was tying a bowline.  They asked "What are you doing?".  I explained what the knot was and why I was using it at the time.  Then I showed them how to tie it.  They were amazed that I was actually thinking about the knot I was using.

I guess most people just tie a shitload of granny-knots on top of each other until it won't come undone.  All that scouting I did as a kid comes in handy every once in a while!

That's a cool link though.  Lotsa neat knots!

I never use a bowline... I always go taughtline hitch, sometimes with an extra half. . . its got the clutch.

I have moved away from the bowline as well, although I use a figure 8 to replace it as about the only time I used a bowline was in a handline or to rig a climbiing rope. I do like the taughtline hitch for a tie down. I use the taughtline more than any other knot for utility purposes (tying down loads, rigging tarps etc).

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

I'm with GratefulJim, the taut-line hitch is one of my most used knots.

my most used?? I'd say...

1. trucker's hitch (sometimes called a Lorry hitch... I could tie down a 5000 pound block of jello on a donkeys back, with this knot)

Yea, knots definitely are useful. I know quite a few that my dad has showed me growing up, but he knows any you can think of.

I have a pretty thick book on knots. Something like 200+ pages. Very handy indeed.
However trying to remember them at the time of need is a pain.
