Philosophers and the Culture of History
    #3788471 - 02/16/05 10:36 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Is it possible that modern day philosophers will ever be recalled on the same level of that we do with many of yesterday?

I have a book that lists short bios of many of the most revered philosophers through history, however as listed individuals gradually made their way closer to modern times, they seem to almost require a field of their own mastery before they espouse their own philosophy. Or maybe this is the substance of a modern day philosopher...eccentric geniuses, poets, musicians, who more or less espouse a creative substance in their own satire and symbolism.

The one legged man leaves an odd foot step.

Honestly, the world is in a controlled state. Some philosopher won't let people know what they have found because they are afraid of ridicule or the world, but most are not allowed to get thier words heard because of the massive amount of obstacles in the way. Also, many philosophers try to sell thier philosophy and fail as bussiness men to a world which love distraction, ignorance and apathy. It is very hard to get a word of philosophy out, it seems.

Luckily, we have free webservices where someone can set up thier own webpage and write whateer they want and who ever wants to can see it. I like http://www.angelfire.com .

If someone is looking for answers, they need to dig up a handful of dirt to find the small stones of fact which they search for. The dirt must be strained through a tight screen and the stones washed clean with water.

There are many great modern philosophers, but many want to sell thier books. Unfortunately a philosopher usually isn't recognized till they are dead. I personally like the free web page approach as I am not selling but giving freely. My page is the first line on my signature.

I got to cut it short. Bye!

this is a metaphor, yes?

I'm with you for the first part, through the 'dirt' to find 'stones'. but then, I'm left wondering what you mean by the 'tight screen' and the 'water'. don't leave all these loose ends, because I'm clumsy and will trip over them!

and re the actual question in the first post...

how many philosophers alive today do you know by name? I can only think of Ken Wilber (not that I'm some philosophy buff in the slightest, and not that he's necessarily a philosopher, though what else is he?). how many dead philosophers' names can you rattle off? I can probably do 10 names without batting an eye.

...hmm, I only got to seven, then I batted an eye big time. but you get my meaning. of course, the past has an advantage over the present in that it's waaaaaay longer, and has more big names accumulated in it.
