Failed attempt. What to do?
    #3787492 - 02/16/05 02:55 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Well after 3 weeks and only slight colonization, my buddy has determined where he failed.
1) The WBS was simmered for too long, and too many grains split
2) As a result of (1) the water content was too high
3) Poor incubator (made with a single rubbermaid and a heat pad) caused too much variation in temps.

5 of 21 jars have shown very small patches of mycelium, 2 have shown good growth, but have since stopped. None show visible contams.

He has put together a TiT setup, and nocd up 7 new jars today. He added a small amount (5-10%) vermiculate to help regulate moisture content. A small amount of BRF (maybe 1 TBSP/quart) was also added, mostly for experimentation. After PCing, the water content looks good, and most of the grain appears moist but not split. Jars were easy to shake when removed from cooker, while still hot. The question IS, is it worth keeping the other jars around to see what happens? should he stick em in the new TiT and just hope for the best? ...or has he stunted the growth so much that he'd be asking for contams before complete colonization? When the jars were removed from the old incubator/heat pad setup, there was a very fowl smell coming from the container. I have heard "sour" smelling is bad, but ive also heard that some stench is to be expected, especially with WBS. Any advice?

My advice would be chuck the fowl smelling ones 3 weeks really is a long time for it to be sitting around incubating. 7 jars is a better Idea when starting up.

IMHO..... empty the soggy puppies, wash, run through dishwasher, reload & go again - fresh. Why keep? They are problem children. Most never turn out worth crap, anyway.

Well luckily he got 3 20cc syringes (B+, Creeper, Cambodian) and used 10cc on each set of 7. 10cc left of each strain

Couple CC of each strain should go into liquid culture. That way, you can propogate enough to knock up 10,000 jars..... if you want.
